Gastroenterologists are physicians who screen and treat patients for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, from the esophagus and stomach through the intestines and colon. Gastroenterologists perform upper endoscopy (esophagus and stomach) and colonoscopy at Unity Surgical Center. These are performed with either conscious sedation or a deeper sedation (provided by an anesthesiologist). Gastroenterologists have completed a college degree, followed by four years of medical school, a three year internal medicine residency, and finally a three year fellowship specializing in gastroenterology. Our gastroenterologists are board certified in this specialty by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
